Food is of a high standard and their camping equipment is fine. If anything, their popularity is a drawback, since groups are largish in high season. Tours which avoid the Inca Trail tax include: an excellent 5-day trek approaching Machu Picchu via Mollepata and Salcantay, crossing the river at the hydroelectric station down river from the ruins for access to Machu Picchu; another interesting 5-day trek heads for Choquequirao with a minimum group size of 8 costing around $195 per person; a 6-day trek to Ausangate which, for around $205 per person, has a minimum group size of 10.
