    1 Author Pick KamiKase Bar Portal Cabildo 274, Plaza Regocijo 233865 One of Cusco's best-established venues, with modern Andean rock-art decor and basic furnishings. Drinks are quite cheap, though when it hosts live music (most weekends), there's usually a small entrance fee, but it's worthwhile if you're into rock and Andean folk. Happy hour 8–10pm; live music usually starts around 10.45pm, but get there earlier for a good seat.

    2 Mama Africa Portal Harinas 191, second floor, Plaza de Armas A good, buzzing dance bar with a small entrance fee and happy hour 4–11pm, playing electronic music on Sundays, reggae on Fridays and Saturdays, mixed disco and hip-hop during the week. They also do food, and often show DVDs (latest Hollywood blockbusters included) in the afternoons and sometimes offers dance classes in salsa and samba. Daily 4pm–6am or later.

    3 El Muki Disco Santa Catalina Angosta 110 227797 Near the Plaza de Armas, El Muki has been pumping out pop every night for over twenty years. With its atmospheric catacomb-like dance floors, it's a safe space for late-night bopping, charging $2 entrance.

    4 Mythology Portal de Carnes 298, second floor Comfortable and chilled, but also good for dancing, Mythology has two bars, mainly spinning funk, hip-hop and reggae.

    5 Ukuku's Bar C Plateros 316, down the alley and upstairs 254911 A highly popular venue with one of the best atmospheres in Cusco, teeming with energetic revellers most nights by around 11pm, when the music gets going. There's a small dancefloor and a long bar, with music ranging from live Andean folk with panpipes, drums and charangos (small Andean stringed instruments) to DJs or even taped rock. There's often an entrance charge – usually less than $2. Daily 2.30pm–2am, plus large-screen movies most afternoons.

    6 Underground Teqsequocha 429 A smallish yet comfy, homely and relaxing space with one bar and occasional live music, although you can also choose music to play from their wide collection. Sports screen sometimes on.

    7 Uptown Portal Belen 115. On the corner of the plaza, below the cathedral, this is one of the main clubs in town with lots of young people on the street giving out free entry tickets as promotions; it's a busy and fun place to be at weekends with a long barfront, big dancefloor and wall-side stage. Salsa lessons offered between 9–10.30pm most days. Snacks available.

    8 Xtreme Portal de Carnes 298 232922 One of Cusco's most popular dance bars, playing a wide range of music, from Latin and Euro pop to reggae. TV and movies during the day. Free drinks 10–11.30pm with the pass handed out on the street outside.
