Rooms are small but the beds are really comfortable and the showers hot, and they're available with or without baths and TVs. Price: $5–25

    2 Hostal Caceres C Plateros 368 232616 A popular travellers' hangout, half a block from the Plaza de Armas. It has a courtyard and is within a stone's throw of most of Cusco's best bars and cafés. Rooms are simple and unpretentious, many being shared dorms (cheapest dorm bed priced at $5). Some rooms have hot water. Price: Up to $15

    3 Author Pick Hostal Familiar C Saphi 661 239353 This quiet and almost homely hostel is one of Cusco's best budget options (it's wise to reserve in advance). Rooms are spartan and can be chilly at night, though the hotel supplies plenty of blankets. There's usually hot water in the mornings and rooms are available with or without private bath (in which case showers are for use by all). Good breakfasts are served in the café, plus there's a free safety deposit box, a cheap left-luggage system and a laundry service. Price: $5–25

    4 Hostal Rojas C Tigre 129 228184 Located very centrally in a congenial old mansion with many rooms based around a lovely courtyard. Spaces are large, safe, airy and clean. Price: $5–25

    5 Hostal Tumi Siete Cuartones 245 244413 Just off Plateros and a little way up from Iglesia Santa Teresa, this place is popular with young travellers, has a spacious courtyard, plain bedrooms, shared bathrooms, access to a kitchen and a useful notice board. Price: $5-10

    6 Hotel Cahuide C Saphi 845 222771 www.hotelcahuide-cusco.com . Located a few blocks uphill from the Plaza de Armas, this is a nice place to stay with clean, modern rooms and a useful message board. A bit pricey but better value in low season. Price: $40–70

    7 Hotel Marqueses C Garcilaso 256 257819 A splendid and sumptuous hotel now under new management, in an ornate colonial-style building with fine period furnishings. Safe boxes and laundry are available. Price: $25–70

    8 Hotel Picoaga Santa Teresa 334 227691 reservas@picoagahotel.com.pe A first-class hotel in one of Cusco's finest colonial mansions, close to the heart of the city. Service is excellent, and the hotel also has a bar and quality restaurant. Price: $70

    9 Hotel El Rosal – Hogar El San Pedro C Cascaparo 116, next to the Machu Picchu train station, San Pedro 257536 A newish hotel, very clean and with all modern conveniences including private bath, cable TV, heating and a cafeteria. Price: $25-40

    10 Hotel Royal Inca I Plaza Regocijo 299 231067 or 222284 A fairly up-market hotel (which has a more expensive sister hotel – Royal Inca II – next door) with a sauna and massage rooms. Very popular with upmarket package travellers. Price: $70

    11 Loki Hostel Cuesta Santa Ana 601, 243705 www.lokihostel.com Four quite long blocks from the main plaza, Loki offers backpackers a great space to hang out in Cusco; it has dormitories and some private rooms, plus the usual bar and cafeteria. Very popular with younger travellers. Price: $5–25

    12 Plaza de Armas Hostal Portal Mantas y Comercio 114, Plaza de Armas 231709 hostal_plaza@terra.com.pe As central as possible, on the corner of the plaza, this hotel is friendly and has main doors opening onto the square. Rooms facing the plaza obviously have the best views, but they all feature private bath and cable TV. Price includes breakfast. Price: $40-50

    13 Amaru Hostal Cuesta San Blas 541 225933 amaruhostal@speedy.com.pe There's a rustic colonial feel here, with a lovely garden patio at its centre and another out back with views over town. There are laundry, safety deposit and left-luggage facilities, plus bottled oxygen. Service is very good, some rooms are old and stylish, while those in the back by the patio are newer but less interesting, most with private bath.Price: $15-25

    14 Casa de Campo Tandapata 296b 244404 info@hotelcasadecampo.com Attractive rooms and cabins (best booked in advance) with great views of the city from a large patio-garden. The quiet, uplifting location on the upper edge of Cusco is dauntingly high for your first couple of days, so take a taxi to avoid exhaustion or altitude sickness. They also offer combined accommodation and language-school courses with the AMAUTA language school, and there's ten percent discount to holders of the Rough Guide to Peru and members of the South American Explorers' Club. Price: $25-40

    15 La Casa de La Gringa Tandapata 148 241168 www.casadelagringa.com A very pretty place that was once used by monks, its South African owner has lovingly restored the yards and rooms in amazing colours. Funky and enjoyably bohemian, this place has connections for jungle trips, mystical tours and, where appropriate, San Pedro journeys. Price: $5–25

    16 Hospedaje El Arcano Carmen Alto 288 244037 A slightly disorganised but otherwise friendly and amenable hostel on the edge of the attractive San Blas area with a reliable hot-water system, laundry, family-sized rooms (accommodating 4–5 people) and a comfortable lounge. Rooms come with or without private bath. Price: $10–40

    18 Hospedaje Turistico San Blas Cuesta San Blas 326 225781 sanblascusco@yahoo.com Located in San Blas, this friendly place features a glass-covered courtyard. Most rooms have private bath and a safe deposit is available. The owners also organize tours to the Inca Trail and do river rafting on the Vilcanota. A good lower mid-range option. Price: $10-15

A relaxed hostal offering a very professional service in a central but quiet corner of San Blas. Nicely furnished, the rooms (one of which – upstairs at the back – has great views over the city) are modernized, spotless and tasteful, all with private bath. Spanish lessons can be arranged here for a reasonable cost through an associated language school and breakfast is served in the main communal space. 24hr internet access.Price: $15–50

    20 Hostal Huaynapata Wayna Pata 369 228034 hostalhuaynapata@terra.com. This modernized hostel is safe and friendly with a 1970s-style decor. It's not that far from the main plaza, and the covered roof terrace has splendid views across the cathedral and down the valley to Ausangate. Price includes breakfast. Price: $25-40

    21 Hostal Inti Quilla Atocsaycuchi 281 252659 Small and cheerful hostel, quite a few steps up from the main square, but great value with cosy but relatively spartan rooms, with or without bath. There's also a pretty little courtyard with a massive Andean pine tree, a nice place to read or just relax. Price: $10–25

It has ten nice rooms, a pretty little yard, breakfast, laundry service and reliable hot water.Price: $15-25

    23 Author Pick Hostal Rumi Punku Choquechaca 339 221102 www.rumipunku.com A welcoming establishment built on an old Inca temple site in one of Cusco's nicest streets. Entered through an ancient stone doorway and based around an inner courtyard, the rooms are really stylish (some lit by resplendent chandeliers) for the price, with private showers and hot water. There's access to a kitchen, a patio, a comedor (dining room) and a small sitting room with a fireplace. Best booked in advance during high season. Price includes breakfast. Price: $25–70

There are also tables in the courtyard where you can soak up the atmosphere while sipping drinks and eating delicious food from the plush bar and restaurant.Price: $70

Exceptionally clean, with minibars and safes in each room; there's also a fine lobby, restaurant and bar and email and fax facilities. Price: $70

    26 Inkaterra La Casona Cusco Plaza Las Nazarenas 113 234010 www.inkaterra.com A newly refurbished, top-notch boutique hotel right in the centre of Cusco. Operated by the Inkaterra group, this is one of the best new places to stay. Although hard to tell from the outside, internally the decor is meticulous in combining style, ethnicity and comfort. They also offer a great range of excursions in Cusco and the Sacred Valley; plus links with Inkaterra Machu Picchu Hotel and the Urubamba Villas. Price: $70

    27 Pakcha Real Hostal Familiar Tandapata 300, San Blas 237484 An excellent family-run hostel in San Blas, this fun, modern home has a shared kitchen, a TV room and patio, constant hot water and reasonable security. Rooms are available with or without bath. The location high above the city centre, however, four steep blocks from Plaza de Armas, is a bit of a hike, and can be testing on arrival from sea level. Price: $10–25

    28 Colonial Palace Hostal C Quera 270 232151 cuzco@colonialpalace.com An attractive colonial building with courtyards and clean, comfortable rooms, but still rather pricey given that it's all slightly down-at-heel. Hot water guaranteed 5am–1pm and 5.30–10pm; other facilities include a restaurant, grocery and artesania. All rooms have private bath. Price: $25-40

    29 El Dorado Av Sol 395 231235 reservasdorado@terra.com.pe A classic four-star pseudo-colonial, relatively modern hotel. Rooms are spotless and the service is good, but the location – less than two blocks from the Plaza de Armas – can be a bit noisy. Price: $40

    30 Gran Hostal Machu Picchu C Quera 282 231111 About two blocks from the Plaza de Armas, this hostel is hard to beat for friendly atmosphere and value in one package. Prices start low since some rooms here are available without private bath; all are set around a colonial courtyard. Price: $10–40

    31 Hacienda Hotel Incatambo San Cristobal, 2km along the carretera to Sacsayhuaman 221918 A beautiful hacienda converted into a hotel, close to Sacsayhuaman and sharing some of the same magnificent views over the Cusco Valley and down to the city. Rooms are smart and with quality conveniences; many are set around a stunning colonial courtyard. Horseriding is offered on their ample estate. Price: $70 and above

    32 Hostal Colonial Matará 288 231811 Pretty basic, but clean and with hospitable service. Many of its rooms are based around an airy courtyard in an old colonial building, and bathrooms are communal. Price: Up to $15

    34 Author Pick Hotel Libertador Plazoleta Santo Domingo 259 231961 cusco@libertador.com.pe www.libertador.com.pe One of the most expensive and exclusive hotels in Peru, set in a thoroughly renovated old mansion close to Koricancha, just a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas. Rooms are stylish and high quality, but it's the spacious lobby with nobbly, genuine Inca stonework that is a real treasure. Price: $50-70

    35 The Point Hostel Meson de la Estrella 172 252266 cusco@thepointhostels.com Opened in 2006, this fun hostel is just two blocks from the main plaza and close to Plaza San Francisco. It has over seventy beds, laundry, kitchen and book exchange based in a large mansion with its own garden. Dorms and private rooms both available. Price: $9–40
