Iglesia Santo Domingo

    Opening time: Mon– Fri 7am– noon & 3–7.30pm, Sat 7–9am & 3–7.30pm, Sun 5.30am–12.30pm

The exquisitely restored Iglesia Santo Domingo was originally built in 1553 by Gaspar Vaez, the first master architect to arrive in Arequipa. Most of what you see today was built between 1650 and 1698, but suffered major damage during the earthquakes of 1958 and 1960. The fine and large main door represents an interesting example of Arequipa's mestizo craftsmanship – an Indian face amid a bunch of grapes, leaves and cacti; and the side door is said to be the oldest in the city.
