It's very secure, has a good library and an excellent cafeteria offering a fantastic buffet breakfast outside under the shady trees. Reserve well in advance during high season. Price: $40-50

Once home to the Bishop of Arequipa, La Casa de Melgar is a nice old place, spacious and stylish, with a friendly atmosphere. The hostel itself is clean and friendly, right at the heart of the action, and has a spacious first-floor patio as well as a small, useful book exchange. Rooms are mostly private, some with private bath. Price: $10-15
