www.lacasademiabuela.com Innovative family-run hostel, whose name translates as "My Grandma's House", combining elegance, comfort and great value. Rooms are set in a variety of garden environments; there are spacious colonial quarters, chalets, family apartments and a fine swimming pool. It's very secure, has a good library and an excellent cafeteria offering a fantastic buffet breakfast outside under the shady trees. Reserve well in advance during high season. Price: $40-50
3 Casa Andina C Jerusalen 601 054/202070 www.casa-andina.com Fairly luxurious and reasonably good value option, with TVs and minibars in the carpeted rooms, all of which have private bath. Also has a pleasant dining room and bar. Price: $50-70
4 Colonial House Inn Puente Grau 114 054/ 223533 www.colonialhouseinn-arequipa.com Agreeable place with a pretty covered courtyard, electric heated showers, private bathrooms and access to TV and internet facilities. Well worth it, not least for the nice rooftop breakfast option.Price: $15-25
5 Hostal La Boveda Inn C Jerusalen 402 054/202562 Cheap and rough but conveniently located on the second floor of an old building, with a vegetarian restaurant beneath. Bathrooms are mostly communal albeit with fairly constant hot water. Price: $5-10

7 Hostal Posada Santa Catalina C Santa Catalina 500 054/243705 Genial if elementary, with a spacious, cool café and pleasant courtyard. While only a few rooms have their own toilets and showers, there are great views to El Misti from the roof terrace, where you can also have breakfast while you wash and dry your clothing. Price: $10-15
8 Hotel Libertador Arequipa Plaza Bolívar, Selva Alegre 054/282550 www.libertador.com.pe Quite a few blocks from downtown but located in a beautiful setting on the spur above the Barrio San Lazaro, this spacious, luxurious hotel is surrounded by the eucalyptus trees of Selva Alegre Park. The price includes a pool and sports facilities, and they serves excellent breakfasts (not included). Price: $40-50
9 Residencial Yolita Pasaje Velez 204 054/ 226505 A comfortable lodging, close to La Casa de mi Abuela, so a possible alternative if La Casa is full. Very friendly, and some upstairs rooms have good views. Price: $5-10

There's also a cafetería, laundry and luggage deposit, and breakfast is included in the price. Price: $25-40
12 Hostal La Casa del Margott C Jerusalen 304 054/229517 www.lacasademargott.com Based around a colonial courtyard, itself slightly crowded by a massive palm tree, this hostel comprises several rooms (all downstairs) with sillar (attractive white volcanic stone from the region) walls and ceilings. All rooms come with good new mattresses and cable TV, as well as optional private bath. Don't miss the tiny bar. Price: $15–50
13 Hostal La Casa de Melgar C Melgar 108-B 054/222459 www.lacasademelgar.com An eighteenth-century mansion with stylish tiled floors and exquisite vaulted sillar ceilings. Once home to the Bishop of Arequipa, La Casa de Melgar is a nice old place, spacious and stylish, with a friendly atmosphere. The best rooms are those with views over the street, and there's also a small cafetería. Price: $10-15
14 Hostal Le Foyer C Ugarte 114 054/286473 hostallefoyer@yahoo.com The sign outside says "La Villa Real", which is the name of the mansion in which this popular backpackers' hostel is located, just two blocks from the main plaza; you'll need to ring the bell to get in. The hostel itself is clean and friendly, right at the heart of the action, and has a spacious first-floor patio as well as a small, useful book exchange. Rooms are mostly private, some with private bath. Price: $10-15
15 La Posada del Monasterio C Santa Catalina 300 054/206565 laposadadelmonasterio@star.com.pe An early eighteenth-century building where families of the nuns once stayed when visiting them; it has a fine sillar courtyard but much of the hotel has been modernized, creating a labyrinthine but plush and pretty environment with a view from many rooms and an inner garden area as well as a bar.Price: $50-70

17 Hostal Garden San Camilo 116 054/237440 A misleading name but still excellent value, with solar-heated communal showers and lovely, old-fashioned, clean rooms with or without private bath. Located very close to the central market. Price: $5–25
18 Hostal Maison Plaza Portal San Agustín 143 054/218929 arequipa@lanet.com.pe Fairly plush with a lovely sillar-domed reception area, and well located on the Plaza de Armas. Unusually for Peru the price includes a decent breakfast. Price: $25-40
19 Hostal Premier Av Quiroz 100 054/227821 www.hostalpremier.com Associated with Youth Hostelling International, this hostel lacks any architectural merit, but it's clean, safe and friendly. It also runs a travel agency, which you can check out on the website. Price: $10–25
20 Point Hostal Av Lima 515, Vallecito 054/286920 www.thepointhostels.com Located in an attractive villa in the suburb of Vallecito, with dormitories and private rooms, a bar, restaurant, travel centre, book exchange and laundry service. Airport pick-up costs extra. Price: $15-25
21 Sonesta Posada del Inca Portal de Flores 116 054/215530 www.sonesta.com/arequipa/ Very well appointed and central, with a top-class restaurant, conference rooms and, more importantly, a rooftop pool and patio with superb views across the city to the southeastern mountains. This is also the only hotel in Arequipa with the dubious advantage of dehumidifiers in all rooms, themselves boasting cable TV, a minibar and an internet connection. Price: $70
