Chile Guide
Valparaíso, Viña and the Central Coast
Reñaca
Lively REÑACA, just 6km north of central Viña, is a 1.5-kilometre stretch of coast swamped by bars, restaurants and terraced apartment blocks stacked up the hillside. It's among the country's cleanest beaches and the favoured resort of Chile's beautiful young things, who flock to its long beach by day and its bars and discos by night. Many people make day-trips from Santiago or stay further north and come in for an evening of dancing and drinking.
Accommodation here is expensive, with the exception of a pleasant campsite on Santa Luisa 401 (
32/832830; $15,000 per site); it's quite a steep walk from the beach but you can take the Concón bus up and down the hill. Otherwise, you're better off staying in Valparaíso or Viña and travelling here by micro. Reñaca's discos are also pricey (average cover about CH$10,000) but remain resolutely popular throughout the summer season; the most fashionable include Kamikaze, in from the coast at Vicuña Mackenna 1106. Every summer a host of new clubs appears, and others disappear, so ask around for the latest – there are always a slew of options for dancing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
