The Basilica de la Merced is a towering, Neo-Renaissance structure with a beautifully carved eighteenth-century pulpit. Attached to the church is a small museum (Tues– Fri 10am–1pm & 3–6pm; CH$500) where, among the usual crucifixes and other religious paraphernalia, you'll find a collection of Easter Island artefacts, including a wooden rongorongo tablet, carved in the undeciphered Easter Island script – one of just 29 left in the world.
