A great location for those who want easy access to the Bellavista neighbourhood. Rooms are spacious; upper floors on the eastern side have unobstructed views of the Andes. Astride the Alameda and Santiago bus terminals, Dacarlo is very handy for early morning departures or late night arrivals. The airport is just 20 minutes away. There's a nondescript restaurant and a bar. Free parking. Price: CH$15000-25000
5 HI youth hostel Cienfuegos 151 6718532 Highly recommended hostel, only a five-minute walk from Los Héroes metro, offers single dorm beds and four-person rooms. The English-speaking staff are very helpful. Price: CH$6000 dorm

On the Plaza de la Constitución, it offers privileged views of La Moneda, the presidential palace and several ministries. There's an outdoor pool on the roof. One of the three exclusive hotel restaurants, the Jardín Secreto, is a favourite among Santiago's elite. Stop in at the bar (open to non-guests) for fantastic sunset views. Price: CH$75000-150000

The restored mansion has a marble entryway, hardwood floors, high ceilings and two interior patios, but some second-floor rooms are a bit shabby. Rooms are tiny, and some don't have an outside view. The garden has a pool, palm trees and a small terrace. There's an excellent Indian restaurant, rare in Santiago. Rooms are large, if a bit rundown. Enjoy breakfast in the flower garden. The heart of Barrio Brasil is very accessible from this hotel. Price: CH$15000-25000

Rooms are clean and ample, with kitchenette and colour TVs, but no cable. This is the closest hotel to Pablo Neruda's Santiago house and to the entrance to Cerro San Cristóbal. Nestled right into the side of Cerro San Cristóbal, the property offers impressive views, spacious rooms, ample green areas, a huge pool and a patio. It's all a bit removed from everything, though. 26 La Posada del Inglés Camino a Farellones 15201 & 2174105 www.chile-hotels.com/laposada.htm An excellent choice for tourists who want to spend all day on the mountain and hit the town at night – but don't want to pay for slopeside lodging. On the road that winds up to the ski slope, but still 30km away, this is a British-run, lovely old house with great views of El Arrayán valley and the mountains. It has an outdoor terrace with two pools, and a lounge with a stone fireplace. Trendy El Arrayán neighbourhood, with bars, restaurants and three discos, is within walking distance. The kitchen serves plates of the day; there is no menu. Follow Av Las Condes to the edge of town; at the YPF petrol station just before Plaza San Enrique, follow signs to Farellones, a right turn.
