In a crypt underneath Plaza Murillo's Cathedral – the entrance is just south of the plaza on Calle Socabaya – the Museo de Arte Sacro de la Catedral houses a small collection of colonial religious art. As well as paintings, there's plenty of extravagant silverwork and sculpture, including the Virgen de la Paz, a fine wooden carving of the city's patron which was brought from Seville in the sixteenth century. The Virgin's devotional cult reached a peak during the siege in 1781, when she was widely credited with saving the city from indigenous rebels.
