    Map

For all its parks and tree-lined avenues, Buenos Aires is nonetheless predominantly urban, and it can be nice to get away from the hectic tumult for a day or two. The northern suburbs, particularly San Isidro, have preserved their villagey charm, and are less than forty minutes away from central Buenos Aires by train. This intriguing watery landscape, which lends itself to kayak explorations and water-skiing, is right by Tigre, a riverside resort with historical significance, a fabulous art museum and a colourful market. Tigre also serves as the departure point for launches to Isla Martín García, a sparsely populated island at the mouth of the Río Uruguay, once a political penal colony but now a nature reserve.
