5 Hotel San Carlos 202 N Central Ave 602/253-4121 or 1-866/253-4121 www.hotelsancarlos.com To appreciate this historic, very central 1920s hotel, you have to prefer an old-fashioned, frazzled and often noisy downtown hotel to a crisp, new deathly-quiet motel. That said, rooms are very tastefully furnished, and there's a nice café, and a rooftop pool. Price: $161-200

7 Metcalf House Hostel 1026 N Ninth St above Roosevelt 602/254-9803 http://home.earthlink.net/~phxhostel/ Dorm beds at $18 for HI/AYH members, $25 non-members, in a slightly rundown location in a residential district, 15min walk north of downtown.
