    Stretching almost five hundred miles from east to west, Tennessee is full of contrasts. The traditional mountain culture of the Smoky Mountains could not be further from the blues-soaked, cotton culture of the Mississippi valley.

    Only one sizeable settlement has found a foothold above the marshlands that line the Mississippi – the expansive port of Memphis. Tennessee's largest city, it is the birthplace of urban blues, and long-time home of Elvis Presley, and is cherished by music fans. The fine plantation homes and tidy towns of middle Tennessee's rolling farmland reflect the comfortable lifestyle of its pioneers; and smack in the heart of it sprawls Nashville – synonymous with country music. The mountainous east shares its top attraction with North Carolina – the peaks of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
