Stone Mountain

Half an hour's drive east of Atlanta's city center, Stone Mountain State Park is arrayed around the base of what's said to be the world's largest natural granite monolith, part of which holds a massive bas-relief sculpture, measuring 90ft by 190ft that depicts Confederates Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Started in 1924 by Gutzon Borglum, who went on to carve Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, it was not completed until 1970. You can see it by paying the $8 per vehicle park entrance fee, but an additional $25 per adult or $20 per child aged 3–11 (reduced ‘twilight' fare is $15 for everyone after 4pm) entitles you to a host of attractions including a 30min train ride around the mountain, paddlewheel and pedal-boat rides on the nearby lake, two mini-golf courses, and the Crossroads theme park, which features a "4D" movie theater. It's also possible to hike up the mountain on a 45min trail, or ride a skylift to the top. 1-800/401-2407 www.stonemountainpark.com
