Getting around

The city's subway system consists of two distinct lines, one east– west and one north– south; they intersect downtown at Five Points (Mon– Fri 5am–1am, Sat– Sun 5am–12.30am; single fare $1.75, weekly pass $13). The system is run by the Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA; 404/848-5000, www.itsmarta.com ), which also operates a wide network of buses.

The Atlanta Preservation Center runs ninety-minute walking tours of Atlanta neighbourhoods, including Sweet Auburn (with emphasis on the churches), and an architectural tour of downtown (March– Nov only, daily except Tues; $10; 404/688-3350, www.preserveatlanta.com ).
