The South

Downtown

Downtown Atlanta centers on the railroad terminus for which the city was founded. During the late nineteenth century, its original core was effectively buried by the construction of railroad viaducts; businesses moved their commercial activities up to the new street level and used their former premises as cellars. Twice now, in 1969 and 1989, the city has attempted to revitalize the underground labyrinth of cobbled streets as an entertainment, shopping, and dining complex. Known as Underground Atlanta (or "the Underground"), it remains a gimmicky mall.
