Breckenridge Brewery 2220 Blake St 303/297-3644 Cozy and lively brewpub opposite Coors Field, with quality craft beer and a terrific range of delicious barbecue plates.

The Church 1160 Lincoln St 303/832-3528 A dance club inside a gutted cathedral that combines a downtown nightlife landmark, wine bar, sushi bar, and three invariably busy dance floors. Programming varies from hard house to garage to hip-hop, and the crowd can be equally eclectic. $5–15 cover.

Comedy Works 1226 15th St 303/595-3637 Right off Larimer Square, Denver's major comedy venue is the most likely place to find big-name stand-up acts on tour. Shows kick off nightly at 8pm, with several performances on weekend nights.

Cruise Room Bar The Oxford Hotel, 1600 17th St 303/628-5400 A replica of the Art Deco bar on the Queen Mary ocean liner, this is worth a stop for the atmosphere alone.

El Chapultepec 1962 Market St 303/295-9126 Tiny, but popular LoDo stalwart with nightly live jazz and occasional big names. No cover, but there's a two-drink minimum.

Grizzly Rose 5450 N Valley Hwy 303/295-1330 Celebrated Country and Western venue that's a 10-minute drive north of downtown on I-25 (exit 215). The huge venue has bands nightly and attracts famous names regularly. There's even a mechanical bull. Cover $5–20.

Author Pick Mercury Cafe 2199 California St 303/294-9281 When there's not jazz on at The Merc, there are tango dance classes, poetry readings, or some other form of entertainment. The club is combined with a good-value restaurant serving healthy choices (many vegetarian) as well as high tea.

Wynkoop Brewing Co. 1634 18th St 303/297-2700 Opposite Union Station, the state's first brewpub serves up solid home-brewed beers and great bar food; there's an elegant pool hall upstairs. Brewery tours, with free samples, are given on Sat (1–5pm) – call ahead to confirm.
