    Map

Berbati's Pan 10 SW 3rd Ave, downtown 503/248-4579 Overly large space has a nightly selection of eclectic bands – local to international – usually for $15 or less.

Blue Monk 3341 SE Belmont St 503/595-0575 A hip little spot along a rejuvenated Eastside stretch, where you can devour serviceable Italian food upstairs and hear the sounds of local jazz performers downstairs.

Crystal Ballroom 1332 W Burnside St, downtown 503/778-5625 Two levels above their Ringlers bar, a nineteenth-century dance hall with a "floating" floor on springs. Bands range from hippie to hip-hop and feature the best of Portland's indie rock and retro-DJs in "Lola's Room" on the floor above the bar.

Author Pick Dante's 1 SW 3rd Ave, downtown 503/226-6630 Perhaps the city's hippest nightspot. Cabaret acts and live music mix with the club's signature "Sinferno" Sunday strip shows and "Karaoke from Hell" Mondays.

Goodfoot 2845 SE Stark St, Eastside 503/239-9292 Frenetic live-music joint and dance club, always sweaty, smoky, and packed on weekends – but worth it to hear top-notch DJs spinning funk and retro-soul.

Holocene 1001 SE Morrison St, Eastside 503/239-7639 Packed with hipsters posing at point-blank range and an essential stop for local DJs and bands, Holocene mixes a range of cocktails and even broader spectrum of musical styles.

Jimmy Mak's 221 NW 10th Ave, downtown 503/295-6542 One of the few choices for nightly jazz in a town not known to swing. Come by to hear local Mel Brown or visiting name acts.

Roseland Theater 8 NW 6th Ave, downtown 503/224-2038 Located in one of the city's dicier corners, but a top spot for rock and alternative acts – often the last affordable venue for fans before the groups start touring stadiums.

Wonder Ballroom 128 NE Russell St 503/284-8686 A specially renovated old ballroom that now plays host to some of the more intriguing national and international acts in indie rock and other alternative styles. Just off a gritty stretch of MLK Blvd, so drive or take a cab.
