The Pacific Northwest

Forest Park

The 5000-acre Forest Park is the country's largest urban green space, interlaced with countless hiking routes, including the thirty-mile Wildwood Trail, which can be accessed around NW 31st Avenue and Upshur Street; otherwise, follow NW Thurman until it dead-ends and take Leif Erickson Drive (closed to traffic) deep into the hills. South of Forest Park, the elegant houses of the wealthy include Pittock Mansion, 3229 NW Pittock Drive (Feb– Dec daily 11am–4pm, opens 10am July & Aug; $7; www.pittockmansion.com), a 1914 French Renaissance Revival gem whose most attractive attribute may be its stunning – and free – view of the city from the front lawn.
