Drinking
1 The Alibi 4024 N Interstate Ave, North Portland
503/287-5335 The pinnacle of Polynesian kitsch, a fun and somewhat divey joint that has cheap, powerful drinks, a spirited atmosphere, and a weekend karaoke scene that's among the city's best.
2 Amnesia Brewing 832 N Beech St
503/281-7700 Terrific summertime people-watching in this microbrewer's beer garden, set on a happening stretch of the North Mississippi District. Quaff a flavourful brew or sample a burger or a banger from the pub menu.
3 Goose Hollow Inn and Tavern 1927 SW Jefferson St
503/228-7010 Great microbrews, the city's top Reuben sandwich, and a convenient location near the MAX tracks, a mile west of downtown. Watch for colourful, bearded owner Bud Clark, the city mayor in the 1980s, best known for his slogan "Whoop! Whoop!"
4 Dot's Café 2521 SE Clinton St, Eastside
503/235-0203 Funky late-night spot decked out in garage-sale décor, offering good brews, the classic bacon cheeseburger, cheese fries, and a helluva grilled-cheese sandwich.
5
Horse Brass Pub 4534 SE Belmont St, Eastside
503/232-2202 Offers a voluminous beer list loaded with micro- and Eurobrews – considered one of the best around – and a savory British pub menu of Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, and the like. Fun atmosphere, too.
6 Huber's 411 SW 3rd Ave, downtown
503/228-5686 Portland's oldest bar is an elegant spot with an arched stained-glass skylight, mahogany paneling, and terrazzo floor. Famous for roast turkey sandwiches and flaming Spanish coffees.
7 Kells 112 SW 2nd Ave, downtown
503/227-4057 Longstanding Irish bar, with fine authentic Irish stews and soda bread, and a range of microbrews, imported beers, and of course, Irish (and Scotch) whiskey. Expect loud, drunken hijinks on weekends.
8 Lucky Labrador 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Eastside
503/236-3555 Dog-friendly brewpub occupying a large space with an outdoor patio. Fresh ales, great sandwiches, and BBQ specials.
9 Pied Cow 3244 SE Belmont Ave
503/230-4866 An Eastside favourite for its coffee, tea, and dessert. Set in a stately Victorian house, it offers late-night hours, lush garden seating, and the chance to puff fruit-flavoured tobacco from a hookah pipe.
10 Produce Row 204 SE Oak St
503/232-8355 Be one of the rare tourists at this local institution. It's stuck in an unglamorous spot by the railroad tracks but is ideal for beer lovers, with dozens of taps and seemingly endless bottled brews. Also has a nice range of live music.
11 Saucebox 214 SW Broadway, downtown
503/241-3393 Great pan-Asian cuisine, colourful cocktails, and nightly music that attracts black-clad poseurs and serious hipsters.
