USA Guide
The Pacific Northwest
Arrival
Portland International Airport (PDX) is a twenty-minute drive from downtown, also accessed from Terminal C by the MAX Red Line light rail (every 5–20min, 5am– midnight; $2.25), which shuttles passengers on a 40min journey along the freeways before heading downtown along SW First Avenue and SW Morrison Street. A cab from the airport into town costs $30. Greyhound, 550 NW 6th Ave (
503/243-2361), and Amtrak, close by at 800 NW 6th Ave (
503/273-4865), are within walking distance of the center; if you arrive at night, take a cab – this part of town is dicey after dark.
The visitor center, in Pioneer Square at 701 SW 6th Ave (Mon– Fri 8.30am–5.30pm, Sat 10am–4pm, Sun 10am–2pm;
503/275-8355,
www.travelportland.com ), has plenty of maps and information on both the city and the state. Portland's main post office is at 715 NW Hoyt St (
503/294-2124; zip code 97205). Unlike most US states, Oregon has no sales tax, so buying goods here can be cheaper than in neighbouring states.
