The Mid-Atlantic

The Cathedral of Learning

Oakland, Pittsburgh's university area, is totally dominated by the campuses of Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh (always known as "Pitt"), and several other colleges. At Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard, the 42-story, 2529-window Gothic Revival Cathedral of Learning is a university building with a difference: among its classrooms the 26 Nationality Rooms are furnished with antiques and specially crafted items donated by the city's different ethnic groups, from Lithuanian to Chinese. These can be visited on ninety-minute guided tours.
