Arrival
Milwaukee is well served by air, rail, and bus. Mitchell airport, eight miles south of downtown at 5300 S Howell Ave, is connected with the city center by bus #80 ($2), and by shared-ride van service ($15). A taxi will set you back about $30. Amtrak is at 433 W St Paul Ave, while Greyhound (
414/272-2156) which has several locations and Wisconsin Coach (
262/542-8864;
www.wisconsincoach.com ), serving southeastern Wisconsin, operate out of the same terminal at 606 N James Lovell Drive. Badger Bus (
414/276-7490,
www.badgerbus.com ), across the street at no. 635, runs to Madison and points between (six daily; $40 round-trip). Take care in and around the stations at night, which can be dodgy.
Milwaukee's Visitor Center is at Discovery World, at Pier Wisconsin (daily 8am–5pm;
414/273-7222 or 1-800/554-1448,
www.visitmilwaukee.org ), and has details on such festivals as the eleven-day Summerfest (late-June to early July), also known as "The Big Gig," and the Wisconsin State Fair (early Aug).
