The Great Lakes
Walker Art Center
Culturally, Minneapolis would be poorer without the Walker Art Center. This multipurpose contemporary art and performance space underwent an expansion in 2005, nearly doubling its exhibition area. The museum balances its permanent collection of sculpture and paintings (such as German Expressionist Franz Marc's Blue Horses) with exciting temporary exhibitions. The eleven-acre outdoor Sculpture Garden (free) is a work of collective genius featuring pieces by Calder, Louise Bourgeois, and Frank Gehry. Its most striking piece is the gigantic, whimsical Spoonbridge and Cherry by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
