Getting around

While Houston's public transit system is woefully inadequate for a city of its size, visitors might get use out of its downtown METRORail tram, which runs north-south for about eight miles – mostly along Main and Fanin streets, between UH and Reliant Park. The Museum District stop is in the middle. Many riders don't bother purchasing $1 honor system tickets. METRO also operates dozens of bus routes ( 713/635-4000, www.ridemetro.org ). Taxis are expensive, and the humid climate and huge distances make walking unappealing. If you can, rent a car. With Houston's wide shoulders, bikes are another option. The Houston Bicycle Company at 404½ Westheimer ( 713/522-4622, www.houstonbicyclecompany.com ) rents three-speeds for $25 a day. Bikes can be placed on the front of buses.
