Arrival
Downtown Houston lies at the intersection of I-10 (San Antonio– New Orleans) and I-45 (Dallas– Galveston), with most of what you'll want to see encircled by Loop 610. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (
281/230-3100), 23 miles north, is the main hub for Continental Airlines, while the smaller, domestic William P. Hobby Airport (
713/640-3000), seven miles southeast of downtown, just west of I-45, is a major hub for Southwest. You'll need to rent a car to see the best of Houston; all the major companies are represented at the airports. Taxis downtown cost about $50 from Intercontinental, $35 from Hobby. The SuperShuttle van (starting at $23 from Intercontinental, $19 from Hobby;
1-800/BLUE-VAN,
www.supershuttlehouston.com ) drops off at hotels downtown and near the Galleria mall, west of downtown. METRObus also offers routes from both airports.
Amtrak arrives at 902 Washington Ave, on the western fringes of downtown. The modern Greyhound terminal is at 2121 Main St.
For brochures and maps, the tourist office is located on the first floor of City Hall, 901 Bagby St (Mon– Sat 9am–4pm;
