Getting around

Dallas proper is circled by Inner Loop 12 (or Northwest Highway) and the Outer Loop I-635 (which becomes LBJ Freeway). Downtown's main sights are easy to tour on foot. DART, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system ( 214/979-1111, www.dart.org ), is a light rail network that operates downtown and travels further afield to places like Mockingbird Station, a laudable example of New Urbanism. Unlike other cities in Texas, Dallas is pouring resources into light rail, and future expansion of the system is planned. Day passes cost $3, and they are also good for the city's buses. The McKinney Trolley ( 214/855-0006, www.mata.org ) runs north from the downtown Dallas Museum of Art up McKinney Avenue to the West Village, a complex of restaurants and bars (every 30min Mon– Fri 7am–10pm, Sat 10am–10pm; free).
