1 All Good Café 2934 Main St 214/742-5362 www.allgoodcafe.com . Fresh home-style cooking at this cheery Deep Ellum haunt, which is more evocative of Austin than Dallas and transforms into a live Texas music venue in the evenings.

2 Local 2936a Elm St 214/752-7500 Upscale but unpretentious modern restaurant in a historic Deep Ellum building. The chef is the owner.

3 Record Grill 605 Elm St 214/742-1853 A small, downtown greasy spoon wedged between a building and a parking lot. A double-meat bacon cheeseburger costs $4. Not far from the Sixth Floor Museum.

4 Sonny Bryan's 2202 Inwood Rd 214/357-7120 The original location – it still looks like a shack – of this favourite local barbecue chain lies uptown. Get there in good time as the deliciously tender, smoky meat can be all snapped up by early afternoon.
