The University of Texas
The University of Texas – and its fiercely supported Longhorn football team, which plays on fall Saturdays at 94,000-seat Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium – has a tangible, almost defining, presence in Austin. You’ll find most student activity in the restaurants, vintage clothing shops, and bookstores on the “Drag”, the stretch of Guadalupe Street running along campus north from Martin Luther King Boulevard to 24th. The campus itself has a number of attractions, too. Oil has made this one of the world’s richest universities, and its purchasing power is almost unmatched when it comes to rare and valuable books. A quiet place on campus to sit and read a book is Battle Hall, which houses UT’s architecture library; note the stenciled open-truss ceiling.
