Getting around
Austin has a good public transportation system. The Capital METRO (
www.capmetro.org ,
512/474-1200) runs buses downtown, crosstown, and through the campus for a flat fare of 50¢, or $1 for express buses. The Dillo, also run by METRO, is a free downtown trolley that snakes through downtown and the UT campus. A newly-opened MetroRail route runs north from downtown. You can rent bicycles from Bicycle Sport Shop, 517 S Lamar, just south of Barton Springs (Mon– Fri 10am–7pm, Sat 9am–6pm, Sun 11am–5pm;
512/477-3472,
www.bicyclesportshop.com ) – reserve in advance if possible. Cruisers cost $22 for a 24-hour rental. Downtown Austin is a pleasant place to take a stroll; pick up free self-guided walking tours from the visitor center.
