Getting around

    There is good bus transportation within the city, provided by RIPTA ($1.75, tickets sold onboard; 401/781-9400, www.ripta.com ), which has a hub at Kennedy Plaza. Also from here, a trolley runs to the ferry docks at Providence Piers, 180 Allens Ave, where you can catch ferries to Newport (May– Oct up to 6 daily; 1hr; $12; 401/453-6800, www.providencefastferry.com ).

    The Rhode Island Historical Society, 110 Benevolent St ( 401/331-8575 or 401/273-7507, www.rihs.org ) leads walking tours through the city.
