Getting around
Though New Orleans's most-visited neighbourhoods are easy to walk around, getting from one to another is not always easy on foot, and if you're travelling anywhere outside the Quarter after dark you'd be better off calling a cab. The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) runs a network of buses and trolleys ($1.25, exact fare required;
504/248-3900,
www.norta.com ). The most useful bus routes include "Magazine" (#11), which runs between Canal Street in the CBD and Audubon Park uptown, "Canal" (#42), from North Peters up to City Park along Canal Street, and "Jackson-Esplanade" (#91), from Rampart Street on the edge of the Quarter up to City Park.
Far more romantic is the handsome sage-green St Charles streetcar (a National Historic Monument, dating back around one hundred years) that rumbles a thirteen-mile loop from Carondelet Street at Canal Street, along St Charles Avenue in the Garden District, past Audubon Park to Carrollton uptown. Service is limited after dark. There's also a newer, riverfront trolley, which runs between the Convention Center and Esplanade Avenue, and a third line that runs from Esplanade Avenue up Canal Street, either to City Park (#47) or Carrollton Avenue (#48).
VisiTOUR passes, which you can use on the bus and the streetcar, cost $5 for one day, or $12 for three. The RTA website lists vendors.
