    1 Indigo Eurasian Cuisine 1121 Nuuanu Ave, Honolulu 808/521-2900 Delicious nouvelle "Eurasian" crossover food, as well as dim sum, served in a lovely old Chinatown building. Opening time: Tues-Sat

    2 Kakaako Kitchen Ward Center, 1200 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu 808/596-7488 Mall diner that dishes up high-quality fast food; pretty much everything, from the hamburger stew to the signature dish chicken linguine, costs $7–10, and there's a menu of daily $8 specials like meat loaf or pot roast.

    3 Keo's in Waikiki 2028 Kuhio Ave, Waikiki 808/951-9355 Hawaii's best Thai restaurant. The menu isn't all that unusual, but everything, from the specialty "Evil Jungle Prince" curries onwards, tastes great, and most entrees cost under $15. Breakfast is both American and Asian; lunch and dinner are entirely Thai.

    4 Orchids Halekulani, 2199 Kalia Rd, Waikiki 808/923-2311 Waikiki's finest gourmet restaurant, facing the beach in the gorgeous, peaceful Halekulani hotel, and offering scintillating contemporary Hawaiian cuisine. Open for all meals daily.

    5 Author Pick Sansei Waikiki Beach Marriott, 2552 Kalakaua Ave 808/931-6286 Wonderful, dinner-only Japanese-inspired restaurant, serving superb sushi at around $10 for a specialty roll, and a full Pacific Rim menu with entrees at $20–40. Late-night dining and free karaoke Fri & Sat.

    6 Shore Bird Beach Broiler Outrigger Reef, 2169 Kalia Rd, Waikiki 808/922-2887 Open-air oceanfront restaurant serving a $12 breakfast buffet, and dinner with an open salad bar for $15–22, depending on choice of entree. Guests cook their own meat or fish on a communal grill.

    7 Taormina Sicilian 227 Lewers St, Waikiki 808/926-5050 Good Italian restaurant in Waikiki's new Beachwalk area, using local fish as well as traditional Sicilian recipes.

    8 Author Pick Todai Seafood Buffet 1910 Ala Moana Blvd, Waikiki 808/947-1000 Stylish all-you-care-to-eat Japanese buffet in western Waikiki. Lunch costs $15 and dinner $29, but the range and quality of the food, including sushi, shrimp, crab, and lobster, makes it a real bargain.

    9 Yakiniku Camellia 2494 S Beretania St 808/946-7955 Korean buffet restaurant a mile north of Waikiki, where you select slices of marinated beef, chicken, or pork and grill it yourself at the gas-fired burners set into each table. Open daily for lunch ($12) and dinner ($19).
