The Abbey Brewing Company 1115 16th St, South Beach 305/538-8110. This small, unpretentious microbrewery serves the best beers on South Beach. Try the creamy Oatmeal Stout – their best and most popular brew. Opening time: Daily until 5am

Churchill's Pub 5501 NE 2nd Ave, Little Haiti 305/757-1807 www.churchillspub.com A British enclave within Little Haiti, with soccer and rugby matches on TV, UK beers on tap, and live rock music. Check website for schedule.

Club Deuce Bar & Grill 222 14th St, South Beach 305/531-6200 This grimy, noisy grunge bar is a remnant from pre-fabulous South Beach. Drinks are cheap, the crowd's indie, and there's a dartboard and pool table. Opening time: Daily until 5am

Hoy Como Ayer 2212 SW 8th St, Little Havana 305/541-2631 www.hoycomoayer.net Despite the city's sizeable Cuban population, this dark, smoky joint is about the only place in Miami to hear decent Cuban music. Check website for schedule.

Jimbo's inside the park at Virginia Key Beach, Virginia Key 305/361-7026 Renowned ramshackle bar where you can help yourself to a beer from a wheelbarrow filled with ice. A good place to chat with the old-timers.

Monty's Raw Bar 2550 S Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove 305/858-1431 Drinkers often outnumber the diners (it's also a restaurant) at this tiki-style bar, drawn here by the gregarious mood and the views across the bay; the loud reggae music can be a bit overpowering, though.

Author Pick Purdy Lounge 1811 Purdy Ave, South Beach 305/531-4622 An unheralded beachside gem, this large neighbourhood bar avoids clogging crowds of out-of-towners by its location on the less-touristed western side of South Beach. Opening time: Daily until 5am

The Raleigh Bar inside the Raleigh Hotel, 1775 Collins Ave, South Beach 305/534-6300. This elegant 1940s hotel bar, with its lushly restored wood paneling, is a throwback to the heyday of cocktail culture.

Tobacco Road 626 S Miami Ave, downtown 305/374-1198 www.tobacco-road.com This friendly dive bar – Miami's oldest, from 1912 – is a favourite with locals for its exceptional live R&B. Check website for schedule.
