Arrival
Miami International Airport (
305/876-7000,
www.miami-airport.com ) is six miles west of the city. A cab from the airport costs $22–52, depending on your destination. You can opt for one of the 24-hour SuperShuttle minivans, which will deliver you to any address in Miami for $15–20 per person (
305/871-2000,
www.supershuttle.com ). Via public transportation, take the #7 Metrobus (
305/770-3131) to downtown, a trip of 40 to 50 minutes ($1.50; every 30mins), or the #J Metrobus ($1.50; every 20–40mins) to Miami Beach farther on. Shuttle buses also leave from the airport to the nearby Tri-Rail (
1-800/TRIRAIL) station, with onward services to West Palm Beach.
A short taxi ride ($10) from the airport will deliver you to the Miami Greyhound station, at 4111 NW 27th Street (
305/871-1810). Most buses, however, also pull in at the downtown stop, at 1012 NW 1st Avenue (
305/374-6160). The Amtrak station, at 8303 NW 37th Ave, is seven miles northwest of the city center. Three blocks south lies the Tri-Rail Metrorail Station at 1125 E 25 St (coming from Amtrak take a taxi, as this area can be unsafe), where Tri-Rail connects with Metrorail services to downtown Miami. Bus #L also makes a stop here. Note that by 2011, all trains and buses should arrive at the new Miami Intermodal Center, next to the airport.
For tourist information head to the Downtown Welcome Center in the lobby of the Olympia Theater, 174 E Flagler St (Mon noon–5pm, Tues– Sat 10am–5pm;
305/379-7070,
www.downtownmiami.com ); otherwise, try the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, 1920 Meridian Ave (Mon– Fri 9am–6pm, Sat & Sun 10am–4pm;
305/672-1270,
www.miamibeachchamber.com ), which is crammed with leaflets and staffed by helpful locals. Also in South Beach is the Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive.
