The West Side

    Map

Comprising the neighbourhoods of Greektown, Pilsen, Little Italy and the West Loop, Chicago's West Side was the gateway for Chicago's myriad ethnic groups, who flocked to the city during its late nineteenth-century boom years and congregated in its now distinct neighbourhoods. Since then, many of the Greek, East European and Italian residents have moved to the suburbs or been displaced by large-scale development (notably the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago), a shift especially evident in Greektown, where these days you'll struggle to find many Greek Americans other than those running the local restaurants.
