Misty Fiords National Monument

The awe-inspiring Misty Fiords National Monument consists of 2.3 million acres of deep fjords flanked by sheer 3000ft glacially scoured walls topped by dense rainforest. As befits its name, the monument is at its most atmospheric when swathed in low-lying mists. The best access is with Alaska Travel (1-800/325-5757, www.mistyfjord.net) who offer a six-hour cruise ($139) and an excellent four-hour cruise/fly combo ($269). Fourteen rustic cabins (mostly $35) are rented out by the Forest Service (1-877/444-6777). Access is either by floatplane with Taquan Air (1-800/770-8800, www.taquanair.com), or kayak with Southeast Sea Kayaks (1-800/287-1607, www.kayakketchikan.com).
