Glacier Bay National Park

Sixteen glaciers spill into the 65-mile-long Glacier Bay, Alaska's finest array of tidewater glaciers. Brown and black bears, moose, mountain goats, sea otters, humpback whales, porpoise, seals, and a colourful array of birds have made the area their home. It is an expensive place to visit requiring either an Alaska Airlines flight from Juneau to Gustavus ($100–130 round-trip). Glacier access is by day-cruise (8hr; $184) from nearby Bartlett Cove, and you'll also need at least one night's accommodation. At Bartlett Cove you can camp for free or stay at Glacier Bay Lodge ( 1-888/229 8687, www.visitglacierbay.com ; Price: $161-200), with tasteful rooms and a good restaurant. Accommodation in a room, a cabin, or a small house can be found in Gustavus in the form of Author Pick Bear's Nest B&B ( 907/679-2440, www.gustavus.com/bearsnest ; Price: $101–160), where there's good eating next door at the Bear's Nest Café.
