Eating
1 Bear Tooth Theatre Pub 1230 W 27th Ave
907/276-4200
www.beartooththeatre.net Top-notch combined restaurant, bar, and cinema where, for $3 on top of your meal price, you can also watch an arthouse movie. The menu has a wide range – Caesar salads ($7), burritos and tacos ($9–11), and gourmet pizzas ($13–19 for a 14-inch), and the microbrews are excellent.
2 Court Café 222 W 7th at C St
907/277-6736. Breakfast and lunch cafeteria that's about the best budget value downtown, certainly a cut above the fast-food joints and more filling. Steaming clam chowder or an entrée will cost around $6.
3 Glacier Brewhouse 737 W 5th St
907/274-2739
www.glacierbrewhouse.com Hugely popular restaurant, bar, and microbrewery serving wonderful food and drink. At least half a dozen toothsome house-brewed beers accompany alder-wood-baked gourmet pizza ($11), spit-grilled three-peppercorn prime rib ($26), or steamed Alaska King crab legs ($37).
4 The Marx Bros. Café 627 W 3rd Ave
907/278-2133
www.marxcafe.com The best all-round fine dining downtown served up in a historic house with views of the water. Start on the likes of Kachemak Bay oysters with pepper vodka and ginger sorbet ($13) or Neapolitan seafood mousse ($15), followed by potato-wrapped halibut with a Provençal sauce ($35). Dinner only.
5 New Sagaya's City Market 900 W 13th Ave at I St
907/274-6173 Trendy and expensive grocery store, deli, and café with a great selection ranging from organic vegetables and great cheeses to pizza, wraps, Thai dishes, and good coffee. The nearest groceries to downtown.
6 Snow City Café 1034 W 4th Ave
907/272-2489 The best place downtown for breakfast – eggs Benedict or Florentine for $11, yogurt, fruit and granola for $6 – or relaxing over a pot of Earl Grey and a slice of cake. Lunchtime options include soups, salads, pesto chicken pasta ($11), and tofu stir-fry ($11). Opening time: Daily to 4pm
