Alaska
Arrival
Anchorage International Airport, five miles southwest of town, is served by bus #7, part of the citywide People Mover system ($1.75 flat fare or $4 day-pass from the driver). Alaska Shuttle (
907/388-8888) charges $10 to take you downtown and taxis cost around $25. The train station is downtown at 411 W 1st Ave (
1-800/544-0552,
www.akrr.com ), and the major sights are easily reached on foot.
The Log Cabin Visitor Center, downtown at 4th and F (daily 8am–6pm;
907/274-3531,
www.anchorage.net ), is across the street from the Alaska Public Lands Information Center (daily 9am–5pm;
907/271-2737,
www.nps.gov/aplic ) which has an excellent natural history display plus maps and brochures. It'll help plan trips into the Interior, and make reservations both for accommodation and the shuttle bus in Denali National Park – vital in summer.
