Veracruz
Los dos Tuxtlas
The two townships of Santiago Tuxtla and San Andrés Tuxtla together form the hub of the attractive, volcanic hill country – known as "La Suiza Veracruzana" (the Veracruz Switzerland) – that emerges beyond Alvarado. The scenery becomes decidedly more interesting at this point, and the cooler climate is an infinite relief. The area's charms (along with Lago de Catemaco) tend to be exaggerated somewhat, aimed firmly at domestic tourists, but it can still be a rewarding place to break the journey south.
