Mexico Guide
The north
Cervecería Cuauhtémo
If you're thirsty after exploring the city, head out to Monterrey's massive Cervecería Cuauhtémoc (Cuauhtémoc Brewery). This is where they make the wonderful Bohemia and Tecate beers you'll find throughout Mexico (as well as the rather bland Carta Blanca), and somehow it seems much more representative of Monterrey than any of the city's prouder buildings. Free guided tours of the brewery run almost constantly throughout the day, and you may be rewarded afterwards with free beer amidst strutting peacocks in the pleasant gardens outside – note the blackened tree trunks there which bear witness to the city's industrial pollution. Tours start across the road from the brewery at Alfonso Reyes 2202 Nte, 1km north of the bus station (Mon– Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 10am–3pm; free; English-speaking tours given, though only a few per day). Connected to the brewery is the Salón de la Fama, Sporting Hall of Fame, commemorating the heroes of Mexican baseball; entry is free. To get there take Line 2 to its northern terminus (General Anaya station) and walk 300m south.
