Accommodation

Capri Victoria 1402 Pte 81/8375-0052 8372-9164 Wonderfully gaudy de paso hotel that is normally the preserve of the one-hour crowd. It's heavily adorned with bright, fake flowers and has large rooms with telephones and cable TV. There's also a Jacuzzi. Price: M$350-500

Casino Arteaga 816 81/8372-0219 Another hourly rental, though it's relatively new and clean, with TV and a/c in the rooms. One of the better-value options among the bus-station hotels. Price: M$500-750

Colonial Hidalgo 475 Ote 81/8380-6800 www.hotelcolonialmty.com Not quite luxurious, but fairly dignified nonetheless. It has spacious rooms, some with en-suite studies, but remains relatively poor value. Price: M$500-750

Estación Victoria 1450 Pte 81/8375-0755 One of the nicest in the area with simple, comfortable and clean rooms arranged around a central courtyard. From the bus station turn right, then right up Bernardo Reyes for two blocks, then left onto Victoria. Price: M$350-500

Fastos Colón 956 Pte, right opposite the bus station 81/8372-3250 US 1-800/839-2400, 81/8372-6100 Comfortable, modern hotel with large rooms all featuring a/c and satellite TV. Not bad value for Monterrey if you don't mind being so far from downtown. Price: M$500-750

Fundador Montemayor 802 81/8342-1694 www.travelbymexico.com.mx Colonial tile meets wood panelling. About the best value for money of all the hotels, and for now the only hotel in Barrio Antiguo, with comfortable and clean, if boring, a/c rooms, all with local TV. There's a fancy restaurant in the same building. Price: M$350-500

Author Pick Gran Hotel Ancira Hidalgo and Escobedo, on Plaza Hidalgo 81/8150-7000 US 1-800/333-3333 www.hotel-ancira.com Built as a grand hotel before the Revolution and full of period elegance, including a winding marble staircase, this is an outstanding (though very pricey, as rooms start at M$1600) upmarket option; owned and operated by Radisson. Price: M$1500 and over

El Gran Paso Inn Zaragoza 130 Nte 81/8340-0690 www.elpasoautel.com Decent mid-range option with winter rates and comfortable, if uninteresting rooms with cable TV and bath. It also has parking, a restaurant and a pool. Price: M$500-750

Hotel Salvador Villagran 1306 Nte 81/8374-5981 81/8374-2545 Rooms are new and largish, with firm mattresses on hospital-bed frames, at this bus-station hotel. Price: M$250-350

Hotel Virreyes Amado Nervo 902 Nte 81/8374-6610 Another bus-station option that has clean and basic lodgings with fan and bathroom, but not much else. Price: M$250-350

Nuevo León Amado Nervo 1007 Nte 81/8374-1900 About the best value of several places on this street (but only just), and the cheapest rooms for lone travellers. Fans, TVs and cheap underground parking. Price: M$250-350

Safi Royal Luxury Pino Suárez 444 81/8399-7000 www.safihotel.com Luxurious five-star hotel with expansive marble floors, elegant staircases and garden. The rooms are spacious, and there's a restaurant attached. Price: M$750-1100

Royalty Hidalgo 402 Ote 81/8340-9800 US 1-800/830-9300 www.royaltyhotel.com Straightforward, middle-of-the-road business-style hotel with a/c rooms, cable TV, gym, Jacuzzi and a tiny pool. Price: M$500-750

Victoria Bernardo Reyes 1205 Nte 81/8375-6919 Slightly faded hotel that's a good bargain (though not the cheapest). Friendly, safe and only a block from the bus station, with some central rooms that aren't too noisy. From the bus station, turn right along Colón and then right onto Bernardo Reyes. Price: M$250-350
