Chihuahua

You're unlikely to see any of the little bug-eyed dogs in CHIHUAHUA, the capital of the largest state in the republic. Though the gloom in poor weather is generally depressing – and a stay of a night or two is ample for most – Chihuahua can have some appeal, with its colonial centre and suburbs of grandiose nineteenth-century Gothic-style mansions built when silver brought wealth to the region. This is also vaquero heartland and one of the best places in the country to look for cowboy boots: you're spoilt for choice in the centre, especially in the blocks bounded by Calle 4, Juárez, Victoria and Ocampo.
