Oaxaca
Arrival
Oaxaca has two bus stations; both are a good distance from the centre – around 2km, upwards of twenty minutes' walk. The first-class depot (with guardería) is on Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec, northeast of the centre; from here your best bet is to find a taxi (around M$25). If you prefer to walk, turn left along the main road for about three blocks to Juárez, then left again for ten blocks to Independencia and right three blocks to the zócalo. Once you reach Juárez you can pick up city buses. The second-class terminal (also with guardería) is west of the centre by the Mercado de Abastos: walk west from the zócalo on Trujano or Las Casas, or north along the market. Many Pacific-coast buses also arrive at this terminal.
From the airport, 8km south of the city, a colectivo service, Transportación Terrestre Aeropuerto (
951/514-4350), will drop you right by the zócalo for about M$30. A private taxi will cost around M$140. On leaving, you should buy tickets in advance wherever possible – they're sold on the Alameda de León, next to the Monte Albán Hotel.
