Northern Jalisco and Michoacán

Pátzcuaro

PÁTZCUARO is almost exactly halfway between Uruapan and Morelia, yet strikingly different from either. Basically a village swollen by the tourist trade, Pátzcuaro is far more colonial than Uruapan and infinitely more Indian than Morelia, boasting both fine architecture and a rich indigenous culture. Add to that the fact that it sits by the shore of Lago de Pátzcuaro, probably the most beautiful lake in Mexico – and certainly the most photogenic, especially during Pátzcuaro's famed Day of the Dead celebrations – and it's hardly surprising that it attracts hordes of visitors. In the vicinity, you can take trips around the lake and to other, less developed villages, and see the site of Tzintzuntzán, one-time capital of the Tarascan kingdom.
