San Pedro Tlaquepaque
The most celebrated of Guadalajara's suburbs, TLAQUEPAQUE (officially San Pedro Tlaquepaque) has traditionally been famous for its artesanías and its mariachi bands. Once a separate town some 5km southeast of the centre, it has long since been absorbed by urban sprawl, and most of its traditional crafts taken over almost entirely by chi-chi designer-furniture and jewellery stores. This said, some of the area's most desirable crafts – ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles and more – are still to be found. Standards are high, but the stores are not intimidatingly exclusive and, though for the most part prices are high, there are usually some moderately priced goods, notably ceramics and glassware.
