It suffers from street noise but compensates with Internet access, laundry and cooking facilities, private lockers and friendly staff who regularly organize nights out to interesting bars. www.hotelfrances.com Just off the plaza behind the cathedral, this beautiful colonial building, founded as an inn in 1610, is the most appealing of Guadalajara's more expensive hotels; it even has an ancient creaking elevator said to be the second ever installed in the city. Even if you're not going to stay, try to stop by for a superb margarita in the lobby bar. Sadly, the fairly drab rooms don't quite match the public areas and you might want to step up to a junior suite (M$819). Price: M$750-1100
