Baja California and the Pacific Northwest

Mazatlán

About 20km north of MAZATLÁN you cross the Tropic of Cancer. The transformation is sudden: while Culiacán lies in a temperate agricultural zone, Mazatlán is a tropical town with a humid airlessness about it.

Primarily, Mazatlán is a resort, and a burgeoning one at that, with hotels stretching further every year along the coast road to the north, flanking a series of excellent sandy beaches. But even as the new avenues of hotels may be entirely devoted to tourism, on the whole Mazatlán seems far less dominated by its visitors than Acapulco or Puerto Vallarta, its direct rivals. Most holiday-makers stay in the Zona Dorada, the "Golden Zone", and penetrate the town itself only on brief forays.
