2 Nanaimo International Hostel 65 Nicol St 250/753-1188 www.nanaimohostel.com Nanaimo's cheapest beds are at this central, private mini-hostel; dorm beds from $12. Located seven blocks south of the bus terminal and one block south of the Harbour Park Shopping Centre off Hwy 1. A handful of camping spots on the lawn (with ocean views) are also available, plus bike rental, laundry, kitchen and Internet access. Price: Up to $40
3 Newcastle Island Provincial Park This site ($14 in summer, $9 in winter) has the only pitches (18 in all, so arrive early) within walking distance of town, apart from the Nanaimo International Hostel. Other sites are spread along the main road to the north and south. Price: Up to $40
