Getting around

Fast, frequent and efficient, Toronto's public transportation is operated by the Toronto Transit Commission, the TTC ( 416/393-4636, 24hr helpline, www.ttc.ca ), whose integrated network of subways, buses and streetcars serves virtually every corner of the city. With the exception of downtown, where all the major sights are within easy walking distance of one another, your best option is to use public transport to hop between attractions – especially in the cold of winter or the sultry summertime. Much to its credit, the TTC has gone to great lengths to assure the safety of its passengers: all subway stations have DWAs (Designated Waiting Areas), which are well lit, have an intercom connection with TTC staff and are monitored by closed-circuit TV. In addition, TTC buses operate a Request Stop Program, which allows women travelling alone late at night (9pm–5am) to get off buses wherever they want, and not just at regular TTC stops. A similarly positive approach has been adopted for passengers with disabilities, who can use a dedicated service, Wheel-Trans ( 416/393-4111).
